What a (Natural) Relief!

The last two mornings, I’ve gotten a migraine headache.  If you’ve ever had one, my heart goes out to you.  If you’ve never had one, let me tell you what a migraine is like for me.  It starts with visual distortions.  This is how I know it is coming.  All of the sudden there is a blind spot in my vision, then I get what I call “Kaleidoscope vision” where everything looks like I am viewing it through a kaleidoscope (but it ain’t pretty!).  The visual distortions usually last for 15-20 minutes.  Next comes the throbbing headache which will last for most of the day.  About an hour after the headache starts, I usually get some nausea which lasts for 30 minutes or so.  Good times.

I’ve tried a lot of things to ease my migraine symptoms.  Some over-the-counter remedies seem to work better for me than some prescriptions I’ve tried (the prescriptions seem to just make the nausea worse), but nothing really resolves the symptoms except for time.  Still I keep experimenting, trying first to eliminate any triggers that cause the migraines in the first place (sometimes for me it is just the angle of the sun, or lack of sleep, or if I’ve let myself get too hungry), and second to find a remedy to lessen the symptoms and duration.

Yesterday, about fifteen minutes into the visual distortions, I tried a few whiffs of Peppermint Essential Oil.  Shockingly a couple of minutes later, my visual symptoms subsided and the headache and nausea never came!  Wow!  Thank you!  I wondered if it could really be the peppermint oil or something else that eased my symptoms.

This morning as soon as my symptoms started, I grabbed my diffuser and added a few drops of peppermint and a few drops of lemon essential oil.  Amazing!  My symptoms subsided in a just a couple of minutes.  I’m not calling this a cure and everyone reacts differently, but it sure makes me hopeful that I’ve found something that actually works for me!  The best part is that there are no drugs, chemicals, or side-affects involved, just pure, natural plant extracts.

Just another reason I love my essential oils!  If you want to learn more about essential oils and what they can do for you, check out my doTERRA site, or click on the link to Essential Oils under the resources tab on my website.
